Creating Miracles in the Mundane

Charlotte Gambill Blog

Have you ever had the feeling that your life is just one long list of chores that never end? I know I have. Our everyday lives are filled with everything from pickups to drop-offs, filled laundry baskets to grocery shopping, cleaning lists to meeting agendas, and lots of paperwork. If we are not careful in the middle of all the ordinary chores, our hearts can start to lose sight of the significance in any of it.

I want to help you with a story,  found in Matthew 21, that has helped me recognize the significance in some of the most mundane tasks. In this story we find Jesus sending two of his disciples out on an errand that on the surface seems to be such a menial task. He asks them to go to a village ahead of Him where they must pick up a young donkey and bring it back to him.

I can imagine how these two disciples had a conversation on their way to pick up the Donkey, about how seemingly meaningless their task appeared in the grand scheme of all Jesus was doing. Maybe they felt discouraged at the choice of task they had been given, believing they had just been put on ‘Donkey duty’ that day. However, the truth is that there was a great miracle hidden in what seemed to be a very basic duty, because that donkey was the chosen vehicle to carry the Messiah. There was a miracle in the mule.

When our hearts start to lose sight of the significance of the ordinary, we have to choose to look beyond and take another good look at our lives from a much bigger perspective. Instead of believing that we are just on ‘Donkey Duty’, we can choose to see the significance of the everyday errands we are entrusted with.

The thing is friends, when we place value on even the smallest things we are handling, we not only see them differently, we also treat them differently. I have come to learn that some of the most valuable tasks in life are often disguised as some of the most ordinary ones. So today I pray that God will help you to see the blessing in the burden as you ask yourself - what miracle is in my mule?
